Sweet 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦, welcome to our world!

Last month, a porcupine gazed before a delighted audience at ZSL London Zoo. Visitors received an unexpected surprise when the mother, Hettie, left her den to give Hershey 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 outside in front of an amazed audience.

Zookeeper Veronica Heldt said: It was entirely up to Hettie where she gaʋe 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡, and this time, her second 𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑦 in seven months, she decided to leave her cozy indoor dens and share the wonders of the porcupine 𝘤𝘩𝘪 𝘭𝘥𝐛𝐢 𝐫𝐭𝐡 with excited visitors.

Porcupines can live up to 20 years in captivity and form monogamous pairs for life, raising their young together. Hershey is a Cape porcupine, which are native to central and southern Africa, and are solitary or found in small family groups.

They live on a diet composed mainly of fruits and roots. They are the largest of all porcupine species, weighing 15kg as an adult, compared to 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡’s tiny 350g, about the weight of a soda can. Litters can vary from one to four, the average is two, with female porcupines can give 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 once or twice a year.
